Teaching with RiverTools 5.0For many years, RiverTools 4.0 offered educational lab licenses which proved to be a great resource for teaching classes on hydrology and geomorphology. Teaching with RiverTools 5.0 is now much simpler and more flexible. Version 5.0 runs in a web browser, so there is nothing for students to install and they can access and work with their data sets from any computer since all data storage and computation is "in the cloud" on remote servers. Every dialog in RiverTools has a Help button that opens an HTML help page for that specific tool, and the graphical interface is user-friendly and intuitive. There is also an extensive HTML glossary of terms. Just by typing in the four bounding latitudes and longitudes, they can download a DEM for any place on Earth in a matter of seconds. In your course syllabus, it is now common to require a temporary subscription to a web application, usually listed with the course's lab fees. For a one-semester course, a Basic tier subscription for RiverTools 5.0 works out to less than the cost of a textbook. (Please see our Pricing page for details.) Students can then easily cancel their subscription (using Stripe) at the end of the course, or keep their subscription to work on their own personal projects.
