RiverTools 2.4 Data CD February 21, 2001 This file contains descriptions of all data sets included on the RiverTools 2.4 Data CD. The file INDEX.xls is an MS Excel spreadsheet with descriptions of the data sets. -------------------------- Subdirectory: 00_Mosaics -------------------------- All of the subdirectories within this directory contain mosaics that were created with RiverTools 2.4 and stored in RiverTools Grid (RTG) format (binary, row major). All of them except Harvard_Glacier_AK, Oahu_HI and Small_KY are mosaics of USGS 7.5-Minute DEMs in SDTS Raster Profile format. The original DEMs in SDTS format for each of these mosaics are included in the SDTS_30m subdirectory. The Harvard and Oahu mosaics were created from USGS 1-Degree DEMs in USGS Standard ASCII format. When several DEMs for a given quad were available, the best one was selected. All USGS DEM products may be ordered from the USGS Earth Explorer web site at earthexplorer.usgs.gov. The Arches_UT subdirectory contains a mosaic for all of Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah. The Beaver_Creek_KY subdirectory contains a mosaic for Beaver Creek, a classic dendritic river network in Kentucky. It also includes a number of other files that were created by RiverTools. The DLG_SDTS_24K/Beaver_Creek directory contains DLGs in SDTS Topological Vector Profile format for the 9 USGS 7.5-minute quads that span the Beaver Creek basin. The KY_Sub data set in the RiverTools Basins directory (not on this CD) is also for Beaver Creek, but was created from lower-resolution USGS 1-Degree DEMs. The Boulder_CO subdirectory contains the USGS 7.5-Minute quad for Boulder, Colorado, home of Research Systems Inc. and Rivix, LLC. The Canyonlands_UT subdirectory contains a mosaic for all of the Canyonlands National Park, in Utah. The Crater_Lake_OR subdirectory contains USGS 7.5-Minute DEMs for both halves of Crater Lake, in Oregon. Since one half has units of meters and the other half has units of feet, this directory also contains DEMs with converted units. The Factory_Butte_UT subdirectory contains the USGS 7.5-Minute quad DEM for Factory Butte, Utah, which is a badlands region. The Grand_Canyon_AZ subdirectory contains a mosaic for part of the Grand Canyon near Powell Plateau, in Arizona. The Great_Sand_Dunes_CO subdirectory contains a mosaic of four USGS 7.5-Minute quads for the Great Sand Dunes National Monument, in Colorado. The Harvard_Glacier_AK subdirectory contains a mosaic for Harvard Glacier, in Alaska. It was created from USGS 1-Degree DEMs. The Kentucky_Rills subdirectory contains a mosaic of two 7.5-minute quads called Bledsoe and Nolansburg which show a sequence of rills. The adjacent Louellen quad is not included in the mosaic but is included in the Quads subdirectory. These three quads have elevation units of feet versus the usual meters, which makes them particularly striking. The KY_Rivers subdirectory contains a large mosaic of the Kentucky River, in Kentucky. The Beaver Creek watershed is in the upper right corner of this DEM. This subdirectory also contains a mosaic of the Bledsoe, KY and Nolansburg, KY USGS 7.5-minute quad DEMs that shows a sequence of rills. The Mt_St_Helens_WA subdirectory contains USGS 7.5-minute quads for Mount Saint Helens, in Washington. The Before and After subdirectories contain DEMs for before and after the eruption that occurred on May 18, 1980. A DEM for the greater Mount Saint Helens region is included in the top-level NED directory. The Oahu_HI subdirectory contains a mosaic from two USGS 1-Degree DEMs for the Hawaiian island of Oahu. These two DEMs are included in the top-level USGS_1Deg directory. The Ryan_Peak_ID subdirectory contains the USGS 7.5-minute quad called Ryan Peak. A watershed is nicely inscribed within the boundaries of this quad. The Small_KY subdirectory contains a DEM for a very small subbasin within the Kentucky River. Because it is so small, this DEM is useful for testing and for illustrating the principles behind computer- automated extraction of drainage networks and basin boundaries from DEMs. The Snake_River_CO subdirectory contains a mosaic of the Snaker River watershed in Summit County, Colorado. This watershed lies just west of the Continential Divide, in the Rocky Mountains. The mosaic consists of four USGS 7.5-Minute quads. This directory contains a subdirectory called Upper_Snake that contains a mosaic for the Upper Snaker river. This small basin also contains the Deer Creek and Saints John Creek watersheds. ------------------------ Subdirectory: 00_Tools ------------------------ The Windows subdirectory of this directory contains the freeware "tar" and "gzip" programs that are available for Windows platforms. These are useful when downloading USGS DEMs in bundled (tar) and compressed (gzip) form. ---------------------- Subdirectory: Arctic ---------------------- The IBCAO_beta.grd file in this subdirectory is a beta version of the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) Grid being compiled and distributed by the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The goal of the IBCAO initiative is to develop a digital data base that contains all available bathymetric data north of 64 degrees North. The IBCAO beta data are distributed in the format used by the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) software, which is a special type of netCDF file. RiverTools files derived by importing the IBCAO beta data into RiverTools 2.4 are also included in this directory. For more information about the IBCAO program or data please refer to the following NGDC/NOAA web site: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/bathymetry/arctic/arctic.html --------------------------- Subdirectory: ASCII_Grids --------------------------- The files in this directory include one gridded ASCII file of the Upper Snake watershed, in Summit County, Colorado, just west of the Continental Divide. Georeferencing information is included in a RiverTools Information (RTI) file. ASCII grids without headers, like this one, can be imported with the File > Import DEM > Gridded ASCII dialog. If an RTI file does not exist, you will be prompted to create one with a template dialog. All USGS DEM products may be ordered from the USGS Earth Explorer web site at earthexplorer.usgs.gov. This directory also contains the RiverTools Grid Upper_Snake_DEM.rtg generated by importing the gridded ASCII file Upper_Snake_DEM.txt into RiverTools 2.4. ---------------------------- Subdirectory: DLG_SDTS_24K ---------------------------- This directory contains vector data in two subdirectories called Beaver_Creek and KY_DLGs. The Beaver_Creek directory contains the nine 1:24K-scale Digital Line Graphs (DLGs) that span the Beaver Creek basin in Kentucky. These DLGs can be compared to river networks extracted from the DEM. The KY_DLGs directory contains eleven more DLGs from elsewhere in the Kentucky River basin. All of these DLGs are in the vector version of the SDTS format, called the Topological Vector Profile format. Each DLG corresponds to a different 7.5-Minute quad in the Kentucky River basin. These DLGs can be displayed with the Display > Vector Graphic > DLG-SDTS dialog. They can also be overlaid on raster images with the Display > Multi-Layer Plot dialog. DLG data may be acquired from the USGS via Earth Explorer at earthexplorer.usgs.gov. -------------------- Subdirectory: DTED -------------------- The files in this directory are stored in three subdirectories, corresponding to different levels of DTED data.
